Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said that retired members of various law enforcement agencies will be appointed to address Dhaka’s worsening traffic congestion.
“We have already engaged students to help improve traffic management. Similarly, we are planning to establish a community policing group consisting of retired personnel from the police, army, air force, navy, BGB, and Ansar, all of whom have experience in traffic management, which will be implemented soon.”
He made these remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting on law and order at the Secretariat.
The adviser noted that the growing number of vehicles and frequent road blockages by protesters have worsened traffic congestion.
Responding to questions about the potential ban on battery-powered auto-rickshaws, he said the High Court has issued an order to prohibit their operations.
He urged drivers protesting the ban to hold their demonstrations at Suhrawardy Udyan instead of blocking roads.
The meeting also discussed other issues, including preparations for Victory Day celebrations, the upcoming Biswa Ijtema, the High Court’s directive to ban battery-powered auto-rickshaws, and measures against fake cases and harassment.
The adviser said a committee is being formed to address harassment and false case complaints, although it has not not been finalised yet.
Regarding roadside businesses, the adviser reiterated that footpath shops would not be allowed, stressing the importance of keeping roads clear for vehicles and pedestrians.
Claiming that the overall law-and-order situation is improving, Jahangir warned of strict legal action against individuals involved in creating unrest, regardless of their political affiliations.
